Why the 4–7 PM Window Matters

Most parenting advice for this window is either generic ("just give them a snack") or guilt-driven ("just enjoy your time together"). Neither reflects what science actually tells us about a toddler's nervous system at 4 PM.

Cortisol RISES at Daycare

By age 3 in low-stress home settings, cortisol declines all day — peak at waking, lowest near bed. At daycare, cortisol RISES from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. The opposite of normal. Toddlers ages 1–3 show the LARGEST elevations.
