Darnell Dallas · The Optimized Father

I never give up, and I'll figure it out no matter what.

Darnell, founder of The Dad System. I treated fatherhood like a business: research it, systematize it, keep improving it.

Why I built this

  1. About a year into raising my daughter, I had more questions than answers. There was no set way to do anything, so I was constantly searching the internet for what to do next.

  2. I run my businesses on systems. So I decided to treat fatherhood the same way: research it, systematize it, and optimize everything.

  3. I didn't have much guidance growing up. My father once told me to imagine if he wasn't here. Those words never left me. I decided I'd approach fatherhood from research, with no excuses, and give it my very best every day.

  4. A normal day for me is work, research, and my daughter: her morning routine, the daycare drop-off, cooking together in the kitchen, playtime, and her bedtime routine.

  5. The hardest part was not being ready. I wish someone had handed me a manual before she was born, something that told me what to do and what not to do. Nobody did, so I built one.

The numbers

The headlines tell one story about fathers. The full numbers tell a better one.

The weight we carry

People call it the mental load. I just call it the job. The bills, the family's safety, their financial future: it's on your back, and you carry it. I'm always thinking about our progress and where we're headed. That's the weight. It's no excuse, and it's no big deal. It's the job.

To the man who's struggling

Brother, look inside yourself. Love yourself. Appreciate everything that's gone right in your life, and focus on the good. And if you're ever lucky enough to have a child, know that it will be the most beautiful experience of your life. It won't be easy. It will be the most enriching thing you ever do.

What I want her to say

When my daughter grows up, I want her to say: my dad did his very, very best. He tried everything he could to do right by me. And I want her to know how much I poured into her: mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally.
