One finding the research is blunt about.
Across four decades and the biggest meta-analyses in the field, the thing that predicts harm to kids isn't divorce and isn't "broken homes." It's destructive conflict between the adults — contempt, silence, slammed doors, fights about the child. Fix that, and you've fixed the biggest lever you control.
Conflict your kids see resolved isn't the enemy. Conflict they see unresolved is.
GRADE A Emotional Security Theory · Davies & Cummings, 1994 · Emery 1982 · Amato meta-analyses · Kelly & Emery 2003
Constructive
- Disagree with warmth and problem-solving
- Lower your voice, not the boom
- Let them see a small repair
Destructive
- Contempt, name-calling, the silent treatment
- Fighting about the child
- Walking out with nothing resolved
Find your track. Read the spine and the red lines no matter what.
Every move on the card carries a ready-to-say script and an evidence grade from A to C. You'll slip sometimes. That's fine — progress beats perfection.
TRACK A
Together: One Team
Run a weekly "State of the Union"
ASplit the invisible load, not just the chores
B+Take the ugly version off-stage
BOpen the gate — let each other parent your own way
B+Turn toward the small bids
B+
For partners parenting under one roof. Us against the problem — not each other.
SAY"Let's list who's remembering each thing — not just who's doing it. You own shoes and sizes, start to finish."
TRACK B
Apart: Two Homes
For nonresident dads: quality beats quantity
AWrite hot messages the BIFF way
B−Keep handoffs short, neutral, child-facing
B"But Mom/Dad lets me…" — different houses, different rules
C→BIf it stays hot, go parallel — that's not failure
B
For co-parents across households. You don't have to be friends. You have to run two calm houses.
SAY TO YOUR KID"Have the best time at Dad's. I'll be right here Sunday." Then let them go, light.
The skill isn't one rule. It's reading the moment.
On-stage or off-stage. Cooperate or parallel. Repair or disengage. The card has the full cheat sheet; here's the shape of it.
Calm disagreement, kids present
Stay on-stageIt's turning sharp or contemptuous
Go off-stageKids saw a real fight
Repair out loudTwo homes, conflict is low
CooperateTwo homes, conflict stays high
Go parallelA hostile text lands
BIFF it"The other house does it differently"
Let it goFear, control, abuse, or a crisis
Stop cooperating
When "work together" is the wrong advice.
Every other page on this card assumes two safe adults. If that isn't true, the frame isn't repair. This page is the reason the card ends here, and it's the one page to read even if you read nothing else.
THIS CARD DOES NOT APPLY IF THERE IS
- Domestic violence or coercive control — a pattern of fear, intimidation, isolation, or financial and emotional control
- Child abuse of any kind
- Untreated addiction that puts the child at risk
- A severe mental-health crisis — active danger to self or others
IN THOSE CASES, THE FRAME IS
- Safety first — for the child and the at-risk parent
- Document everything — written-only contact, save records and logs
- Structured, legal arrangements — joint custody and forced mediation are often contraindicated with coercive control
- Real support — a DV advocate, an attorney, people who've done this

Nine pages. On the fridge in ten minutes.
Open the card and print from Chrome.
Scale 100%. Margins: None. Background graphics: ON. That last one matters — the color blocks are the layout.
Use heavy matte paper.
32 lb is the sweet spot. It laminates flat and reads like a real card, not a printout.
Laminate, one sheet per pouch.
Let each one cool flat for a minute before stacking.
Put the Wall Display page where both adults see it.
The fridge, the inside of the pantry door, wherever the handoffs happen. The rest can live in a drawer.
