When NOT to Cooperate

🧭 THE ONE THING THE RESEARCH IS BLUNT ABOUT

It's not whether you're together or apart that shapes your kid — it's the conflict between the adults. A calm two-home family beats a hostile intact one. Kids who see conflict resolved aren't harmed — they learn it's survivable.

🎯 HOW TO USE THIS CARD

Find your track — Together (one home) or Apart (two homes) — but read the spine and the red lines no matter what. Every move here has a ready-to-say script and an evidence grade (A–C). You'll slip sometimes. That's fine. Progress beats perfection.

🧭

The Shared Spine

True whether you're together or apart — read this first

Conflict your kids see resolved isn't the enemy.
Conflict they see unresolved — contempt, silence, slammed doors — is.

EMOTIONAL SECURITY THEORY · DAVIES & CUMMINGS, 1994 · GRADE A

✅ Constructive

Disagree with warmth & problem-solving
Lower your voice, not the boom
Let them see a small repair
Teaches: conflict is survivable

🚫 Destructive

Contempt, name-calling, the silent treatment
Fighting about the child
Walking out with nothing resolved
Teaches: I'm not safe
🔁
Repair out loud — kids need to see the make-up, not just the fight B+
They don't need parents who never clash. They need to watch the clash get fixed.
Say: "You saw us get heated earlier. We worked it out — we're good. That was never your fault."
💧
Watch the spillover — a bad adult day leaks into your parenting B+
Stress in the grown-up relationship drips down into how you treat the kids — and back again. Protecting the adult team protects the child. (Erel & Burman, 1995)

🧬 WHY THIS IS THE WHOLE GAME

Across 40+ years of research, the most consistent finding is this: destructive interparental conflict — not divorce, not "broken homes" — is what predicts harm. Fix the conflict and you've fixed the biggest lever you control. (Emery 1982; Amato meta-analyses; Kelly & Emery 2003)

Together: One Team

For partners parenting under one roof — us against the problem
🎯 A new baby drops most couples' satisfaction for a while — that's normal, not broken. The ones who hold steady run a real team. (Shapiro/Gottman 2000)
🗓️
Run a weekly "State of the Union" A
15 min. What worked, what's heavy, who's carrying what next week. Coaching the team is proven to help kids. (Family Foundations RCT, Feinberg 2016)
Open with: "Two wins from this week, then one thing I want to hand off or split."
🧠
Split the invisible load, not just the chores B+
The tax isn't washing bottles — it's remembering they need washing. Hand off whole jobs, including the noticing. (Daminger, ASR 2019)
Say: "Let's list who's remembering each thing — not just who's doing it. You own shoes & sizes start to finish."
🚪
Take the ugly version off-stage B
Disagree in front of the kids if it's calm. If it's about to get sharp, step away and align in private — then come back united.
Say (in front of kids): "Mom and I need a minute — back in five." Then privately settle it.
🚪
Open the gate — let each other parent your own way B+
Criticizing or taking over ("gate-closing") pushes the other parent out over time. It cuts both ways — dads gatekeep too. (Schoppe-Sullivan 2008)
Say: "You two have your own bedtime thing — I'm staying out of it." / "Let me find my own rhythm with her, even if it looks different from yours."
💛
Turn toward the small bids B+
"Look at this" / "I'm wiped." Answering those tiny moments — far more than you snub them — is what steady couples do. (Gottman & Levenson 1992)
Repair mid-fight: "Can we restart? That came out wrong."

Apart: Two Homes

For co-parents across households — calm, businesslike, child-first
🤝 You don't have to be friends. You have to run two calm houses. "Cooperative Colleagues" — not best pals — is the realistic, protective target. (Ahrons 1994)
👨‍👧
For nonresident dads: quality beats quantity A
It's not the hours — it's being a warm, firm, real parent in the time you get (plus paying support). Skip "Disneyland dad." (Amato & Gilbreth 1999; Adamsons & Johnson 2013)
📩
Write hot messages the BIFF way B-
Brief, Informative, Friendly, Firm. Answer logistics only. Skip the bait. Creates a calm record. (Eddy, High Conflict Institute)
Instead of defending: "Thanks for the note. Pickup is Friday 5pm as ordered. See you then."
🚗
Keep handoffs short, neutral, child-facing B
No relitigating at the curb. Warm to the kid, businesslike to the adult. Loyalty binds are what hurt kids most. (Emery 2004)
Say to your kid: "Have the best time at Dad's. I'll be right here Sunday." (Then let them go, light.)
🏚️
"But Mom/Dad lets me…" — different houses, different rules C→B
Identical rules across homes is overrated — kids adapt fine. Warmth + low conflict inside each home is what matters. (Kelly & Emery 2003; Emery 2016)
Say: "Different houses, different rules. In this house, this is how we do it."
🛡️
If it stays hot, go parallel — that's not failure B
High conflict? Disengage. Minimal contact, business-only, each home runs itself. It shields the kid from the conflict that does the damage.
The never-say list: never trash the other parent, never quiz the kid, never use them as a messenger.

Which Move, When

On-stage vs. off-stage · cooperate vs. parallel · repair vs. disengage
🧭 The skill isn't one rule — it's reading the moment and picking the right move. Here's the cheat sheet.
Calm disagreement, kids present
Stay on-stage — let them see you work it out. It's a lesson.
It's turning sharp or contemptuous
Go off-stage — "give us five" — settle it privately, return aligned.
Kids saw a real fight
Repair out loud — show the make-up. Name it as not their fault.
Two homes, conflict is low
Cooperate — Colleague mode: shared calendar, flexible, child-first.
Two homes, conflict stays high
Go parallel — minimal contact, business-only, each home runs itself.
A hostile text lands
BIFF it — brief, friendly, firm. Logistics only. Don't take the bait.
"The other house does it differently"
Let it go — different houses, different rules. Hold your own warmly.
Fear, control, abuse, or a crisis
Stop cooperating — safety, documentation, legal help. See the red lines →

The Two-Home & One-Team Rules

Stick it on the fridge — almost everything traces back to these

✅ DO

Let kids see conflict get resolved
Repair out loud after a fight they saw
Run a weekly check-in as a team
Split the invisible load, not just chores
Open the gate — let each other parent
Keep handoffs short, warm, child-facing
Answer hot texts BIFF: brief & firm
Pick cooperate or parallel by the conflict level

🚫 DON'T

Fight with contempt in front of kids
Walk away leaving it unresolved
Contradict each other on-stage
Badmouth the other parent — ever
Use the kid as a messenger or spy
Quiz them about the other house
Make them choose sides (loyalty binds)
Force identical rules across two homes

💡 ONE LINE TO REMEMBER

Together: us against the problem, not each other.  •  Apart: we don't have to be friends — we have to run two calm houses. Either way: protect the child from the conflict, not from the other parent.

The Red Lines

When "work together" is the WRONG advice — and can be dangerous

⛔ THIS CARD DOES NOT APPLY IF THERE IS:

🔴 Domestic violence or coercive control — a pattern of fear, intimidation, isolation, or financial/emotional control (not just one argument)
🔴 Child abuse of any kind
🔴 Untreated addiction that puts the child at risk
🔴 A severe mental-health crisis — active danger to self or others

✅ IN THOSE CASES, THE FRAME IS NOT REPAIR. IT IS:

🛡️ Safety first — for the child and the at-risk parent
📋 Document everything — written-only contact, save records & logs
⚖️ Structured, legal arrangements — joint custody & forced mediation are often contraindicated with coercive control (Jaffe et al. 2008; Stark 2007)
🤝 Get real support — a DV advocate, an attorney, the court — not "communicate better"

♻️ WHAT TO BUY USED VS. NEW

Buy used: all four books — try your library first, then ThriftBooks, a used bookstore, or Bookshop.org. A laminator, too; they barely wear out.

Buy new: paper, laminating pouches & dry-erase markers — consumables where used doesn't save much.
