🏆 WHAT MAKES THIS WORK

✅ Readiness gate first — pushing a not-ready toddler backfires
🍑 Bare-bottom Day 1 — instant feedback links feeling to action
💧 Fluid-loading — more drinks = more reps = faster learning
🔊 One cue sound + zero shame on misses — calm beats fast
🪑 Poop posture built in — footstool / TotSquat for easy, healthy BMs

🎯 WHAT "TRAINED BY DAY 7" REALLY MEANS

Daytime pees mostly in the potty, far fewer accidents, and she tells you when she needs to go. NOT zero accidents, NOT poop mastered for every kid, and NOT nights — overnight dryness is body-maturity driven and can take months. That's normal, not failure.

✅

Is She Ready?

The most important page — don't skip it
⛔ Don't start until she shows MOST of these. Readiness beats willpower — a forced, not-ready toddler just learns to hold it.
⏱️
Stays dry 1.5–2 hours
Dry after naps, or a dry diaper for a couple hours = bladder is maturing.
👀
Curious about the potty / toilet
Watches you, wants to flush, asks questions, enjoys potty books.
👖
Can pull pants down & up (mostly)
Elastic waist or a dress. A little help is fine.
🗣️
Follows a simple 1-step direction
"Go sit on the potty." She needs understanding, not many words.
💬
Signals she's going (or just went)
Tells you, points, grunts, hides, or makes a "going" face. Awareness is key.
🙋
Shows some "me do it" independence
Wants to do things herself — you'll ride that wave.

🚦 SCORE IT — count the boxes she checks

5–6 → Green light. Pick a weekend, clear the calendar, run the bootcamp.

3–4 → Warm up first. 1–2 weeks of potty interest + practice sits, then start.

0–2 → Wait. Revisit in 2–4 weeks. Earlier isn't better — ready is better.

Gear & Game Plan

Set up once · then it's all about reps
🧺 You don't need much — and you don't need to buy anything new to start. The potty you own is your Day-1 hero.
🛒 GRAB THIS BEFORE DAY 1
HAVE
The potty you already own — your best Day-1 tool: fast access, no fall-in fear, goes in whatever room she's in.
GET
10–15 cotton training undies — she must FEEL wet. Let her pick the characters for buy-in.
GET
Fluids + salty snacks she loves — water, milk, watered juice + crackers/popcorn drive lots of pees = lots of practice.
GET
Waterproof pads — couch, car seat, mattress, play area. Saves your sanity all week.
GET
Sticker chart + small non-food rewards — stickers, a bubble blow, a high-five dance. She places the sticker herself.
OPTIONAL
TotSquat / step stool + seat reducer — skip for Day 1; bring it in for poops & the big-toilet switch (feet supported = easier pushing).

♻️ BUY IT USED FIRST

Undies, step stools, potty seats & waterproof pads are great secondhand — just wash hot before use. Skip used on anything you can't fully sanitize.

🍑

Day 1: Naked & Aware

Stay home all day · Stay close · Stay calm
Today she connects the feeling to the action. A bare bottom gives instant feedback — no diaper to hide behind. It will be messy, and that's the point.
1
👋
Ditch the diaper together
Little ceremony: "Bye-bye diapers — you're a big kid now!" Make it exciting.
2
🍑
Bare bottom all day — no undies yet
Undies feel like a diaper. Bare = she feels it the instant it starts.
3
💧
Load the fluids + salty snacks
Offer drinks constantly. More pees today = more chances to practice and win.
4
⏰
Offer the potty every 20–30 min
Also after drinks, meals & waking. Sit 3–5 min max. Offer — never force.
5
🔊
Same cue sound + narrate every time
"Pssss… pee goes in the potty!" Naming it builds the connection fast.
6
💃
Watch for the tells
Pausing, holding, the "pee dance," squatting, going quiet → rush to the potty.
7
🎉
Catch = big party. Miss = totally calm.
Clap & sticker for catches. For misses: "Pee goes in the potty — next time." No scolding.
8
🏠
Keep her near the potty
Hard floors, potty in the room you're in. Cancel outings — today is all-in.
🎵 SITTING SONG — sing during sits
"Sit, sit, sit on the potty! Take your time, there's no hurry! You're so big and you're so smart — pee-pee in the potty, you're a star!"
THE DAD SYSTEM • @the_dadsystem • Day 1: Naked & Aware • Print & Laminate 💛
🩲

Days 2–3: Undies & Cues

Misses drop · Catches climb · She takes the lead
The connection is forming. Add undies, stretch the clock, and shift from YOU reminding to HER noticing. Keep fluids high and keep celebrating.
1
🩲
Switch to cotton undies — commando
No diaper over them. Still feels wet, but a real step up from bare.
2
⏰
Stretch sits to every 45–60 min
Follow her rhythm, not the clock. Longer dry stretches = progress.
3
🗣️
Prompt less, ask more
"Let's go" → "Do you need to go?" → "Tell me when you need to go."
4
🙌
Let her run the steps
Pull pants, sit, wipe, flush, wash. Doing it herself makes it stick.
5
😴
Naps & sleep: a diaper is okay
Undies + waterproof pad, OR a "sleep diaper" for naps/night only. Days & nights are separate jobs.
6
🚪
One short outing — late Day 3
Potty right before leaving. Bring a travel potty + 2 spare outfits. Keep it 30–45 min.
7
🎉
Wins loud, misses boring
Big energy for catches. Flat & kind for accidents — clean up together, move on.
8
📊
Mark the chart together
She places her own sticker. Watching the row grow is powerful motivation.
🎵 DANIEL TIGER — the classic
"If you have to go potty — STOP! And go right away! Flush and wash and be on your way!"

🔒

Days 4–7: Locking It In

Fewer reminders · Real life · Tackle poop
Now you build durability — back into normal life, and handle the part that often lags: poop. Footstool posture is the secret weapon here.
1
⏳
Fade the reminders
Let her initiate. Prompt only at transitions — leaving home, car rides, before sleep.
2
🚗
Errands & outings in undies
Empty bladder first, pack the kit, scope the bathroom on arrival.
3
🪑
THE POOP PIECE — posture matters
Poop often follows pee. Feet on a footstool (knees ABOVE hips) relaxes things — where a step stool / TotSquat earns its keep.
4
🍎
Prevent withholding
Keep water + fruit/fiber up. Never rush or punish poop. Privacy if she wants it. A holding kid stalls everything.
5
🚽
Move to the big toilet (optional)
Seat reducer + stool so she's secure — no fear of falling in. The natural TotSquat moment.
6
🧑‍🏫
Hand off to caregivers
Share the plan, send undies + spares, use the SAME cue words everywhere.
7
🔁
Expect a regression or two
Travel, illness, a new sibling can cause a slip. Stay calm, back to Day-1 basics briefly — it bounces back.

🌙 NIGHTS ARE A DIFFERENT JOB

Overnight dryness depends on bladder size + a hormone her body makes on its own schedule — it can lag daytime by months or years. Keep night diapers with zero shame. She's ready when the morning diaper is dry several days running.

Daily Potty Rhythm

Anchor sits to moments she already has — no nagging
💡 Don't ask "do you need to go?" — toddlers reflexively say no. Tie the potty to routines instead: "Potty time, then we leave." It skips the whole negotiation.
🗓️ WHEN TO START — match it to her age
0–18 mo
Optional · EC only
Only if you're doing Elimination Communication: make a cue sound ("pssss") after waking & feeds. No pressure — just build the association.
18–24 mo
Gentle start
Just 2–3 anchors — after waking & after meals (add bath if easy). 2–3 min, no expectation she goes. Stop if she protests.
2–3 yr
★ Full rhythm
Run ALL the anchors below, once readiness shows (dry 1.5–2 hrs, tells you, pulls pants). The bootcamp sweet spot.
🌅
First thing after waking — AM & from naps
Her bladder filled all night — this is the easiest catch of the day. 2–3 min.
🍽️
~15–20 min after meals
Eating triggers the urge (the gastrocolic reflex). After breakfast is prime poop time. 2–3 min.
🛁
Right before bath or shower
Warm water makes kids pee — get to the potty first and save the cleanup. 2–3 min.
🚗
Before you leave the house
The "go before we go" rule — fewer roadside emergencies. 2–3 min.
😴
Before nap & before bed
Empty tank = a better shot at dry sleep. 2–3 min.
⏱️
Early days: also every ~1.5–2 hours
Days 1–3, offer often. As she gets it, lean on the anchors above & let her lead.

🪑 RULES OF THE SIT

Keep it short: 2–5 minutes, never longer. Never force her to stay or hold her down.

Keep it relaxed: bring a book. Praise the effort (sitting & trying), not just results — if nothing happens, calmly move on.

🧼 ACCIDENT LAUNDRY — soiled undies & clothes

1 · Cold rinse first — hot water sets protein stains, so always rinse cold first.

2 · Soak 15–30 min in an enzyme baby detergent (e.g. Molly's Suds), then wash & sun-dry — UV naturally bleaches the rest for free.

Do / Don't + Troubleshooting

Tape this on the bathroom wall

✅ DO

✔ Go all-in & stay home the first 3 days
✔ Load fluids — more pees = more practice
✔ Celebrate every single catch
✔ Keep misses calm, neutral & quick
✔ Let her run the steps herself
✔ Keep the potty in the room she's in
✔ Use the same cue words everywhere
✔ Dress her in easy-on pants or dresses

🚫 DON'T

✘ Punish, shame, or show frustration
✘ Ask "do you have to go?" 100×/day
✘ Force a long sit or hold her down
✘ Make her flush if it scares her
✘ Flip back to daytime diapers mid-week
✘ Compare her to other kids online
✘ Start during chaos (move, baby, trip)
✘ Treat poop & nights as week-1 goals

🔧 IF YOU HIT A WALL

Fighting the potty / holding it in → Don't battle. Offer, don't force. More fluids, relaxed sits, books on the potty. Lower the pressure.
Lots of misses & no catches by end of Day 2 → She may not be ready. Pause, back to diapers with no drama, retry in 2–4 weeks. NOT failure.
Holding poop / hard or painful stools / no BM in 2–3 days → Drop all poop pressure, boost water + fruit/fiber. This is constipation and it stalls everything — call your pediatrician if it persists, hurts, or there's blood.
Regression after early wins → Usually stress or change. Stay calm, return to Day-1 basics for a day or two.
Call the pediatrician if → pain or blood when going, no urination for many hours, or fever / signs of a UTI.

"You're not building a habit in a week — you're starting one. Calm and consistent beats fast every time."

Daycare Handoff

Get you, her, and her teachers on the same page
🔑 Consistency between home & daycare is what locks it in. Same cue words, same routine, no surprise daytime diapers.
📦 PACK HER BAG (label everything)
PACK
6–8 spare underwear — more than you think; accidents cluster early.
PACK
2–3 full outfit changes — tops, bottoms, socks. Weather-appropriate.
PACK
A wet bag or grocery bags — for soiled clothes to come home in.
PACK
Her travel potty / seat reducer — only if she's used to one; otherwise skip.
NAP ONLY
A labeled "sleep diaper" — for nap/quiet time only, if she still needs it. Days stay in undies.
🗣️ ALIGN WITH HER TEACHERS — ASK / AGREE
Undies in the daytime — not pull-ups
Pull-ups feel like diapers and slow her down. Reserve them for nap only.
Use our exact cue words & the anchor times
Share your word (e.g. "potty time") and the after-nap / after-meal / before-outing rhythm.
Take her at routine times — don't ask "do you need to go?"
Toddlers say no. Taking her on the routine sidesteps the standoff.
Keep accidents calm & shame-free
Ask how they handle cleanup so she's never embarrassed in front of peers.
Send a daily note home
Catches, accidents, and any poop or holding — so you can adjust together.

❓ ASK ABOUT THEIR POLICY

Many rooms require a set number of dry days or "underwear-ready" status to move up. Find out their exact bar so you both know what you're aiming for.
